A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens Adapted by Charles Renot Directed by John Short December 10-19, 1999 As a special holiday offering, HSC closed out the 1999 season with a rare treat, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Originating as a one-time school performance for OLC students, this production quickly spanned into a multi-venue tour as more organizations became interested in having a holiday showing. Subsequently shows ran at the Hoboken City Courtroom and the 5 Corners Library Theater. John Short, long time actor with HSC and theatrical student, took on the task of directing his very first show and chose a version of the famous story that underscored scenes with narration from a grandmotherly story teller. Also, continuing in the vein of previous 1999 productions, Short used non traditional casting and updated the setting of the piece to present day. Charles J. Roby, having previously been seen as Cicero in Julius Caesar and Gremio in Taming of the Shrew, took on the part of the modern day Scrooge. Pictured below are shots of a performance at OLC Victory Hall. Narrator (Betsy Smith) begins her tale of greed and redemption in the guise of the holiday cheer.
Fred (James Thompson) is dismissed by his Uncle Scrooge.
