The Odd Couple

By Neil Simon

Directed by Charles J. Roby

Oct 27-Nov 11, 2000

Finishing out the 2000 season, Hudson Shakespeare returned with a Neil Simon staple, The Odd Couple.  Once again returning for an indoor showing at OLC VIctory Hall, Charles J. Roby took the helm of this production.  A veteran of a several HSC productions including appearing previously as Prospero in The Tempest and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and a fan of the original movie and TV series, Roby decided to have the action take place in present day rather than in the 1960's or 1970's.  Taking on the story of a divorced sports writer and consumate slob Oscar Madison (Jon Ciccarelli) as  he mingles with his reserved, recently divorced and obsessively clean roomate Felix Ungar (Carlos Fernandez).  The sparks fly as Oscar well running, messy and indebt life is disrupted by Felix moving in and making the place, well livable.  First, the boys weekly event, their poker game is affected.  While their friends Roy (Carl Furst), Speed (Joe Sinisi) , Vinnie (Frank Monte Magno),and  Murray (Duncan Pflaster) first complain about Oscar's living conditions, they next complain about the antiseptic state that Felix has left the place in.  Next, Felix interferes with Oscar's other pastime, girls.  Felix, reluctantly goes through with a dinner date with their upstairs neighbors the Pigeon sisters Cecily (Cheryl Rossillo) and Gwendolyn (Roxanne Arroyo).    The usual button down Felix feels that he is out of place and its too soon after his separation to go through with the date.  With Oscar late, the dinner burnt and girls arriving, the evening goes awry and Felix moves out.  Though you never know what you have until its gone.  Oscar worries and misses the pain that was his roommate and best friend.  The boys reconcile in the end.
